ENERGY AUDIT FAQs

What is an Energy Audit?

An energy audit is a comprehensive assessment of the energy efficiency and general health & safety of your home. It is the first step recommended when planning on making improvements to your home. During the audit, we will determine the air tightness of your home, diagnose air leakage issues with infrared inspection, record your insulation levels, and test the efficiency and safety of your HVAC equipment.

How much does an energy audit cost?

An energy audit is valued at $400. If you have never had an audit performed and your utility is currently providing a rebate program, the cost is $100. BGE and PEPCO both have rebate programs currently.

How long does it take to perform an audit?

The process can take anywhere from two to five hours depending on the size and complexity of the home. Our auditors generally complete an audit within three hours.

Do I need to be present for the entire audit?

No, you are welcome to observe the audit but you will not be needed for the entirety of the assessment. However, it is a good idea to make our auditors aware of any areas of concern throughout the home. We recommend homeowners be present for the blower door portion of the assessment because that can be the most revealing part of the process.

What is a blower door test?

A blower door is a machine used to test the air tightness of a home. The blower door will be installed at an entry door and when turned on will remove air from the home and force air to come in through areas of the home where is should not. During this test we will make observations of these areas of leakage through infrared testing and recommend solutions to sealing these areas. This test helps us confirm why certain areas of the home may be uncomfortable and inefficient.

Can children and pets be present for the audit?

Yes. We will be in each room of the home but the testing performed does not require the home be empty. The blower door is not very loud; it just sounds like a big fan. We routinely perform audits with young children and dogs/cats in the home.

Do I get some kind of report of the audit?

Yes. You will receive a full report of our observations and corresponding recommendations within a week of your audit. The report will include estimated savings associated with our recommendations.

ENERGY UPGRADE FAQs

Can GreenWorks Systems provide installation of the recommendations from the audit?

Yes. We can provide proposals for any and all recommendations. We are a one-stop shop to improving your home.

If we have the audit and recommendations are made for improvement, are we required to make those improvements?

No. You are not required to make any improvements just because an audit has been completed. The audit is like a road map to efficiency. It will show you how to make your improvements but you decide when you would like to make them. When the time is right for you to make the improvements, our team can help.

Is there a time period associated with being eligible for rebate?

Yes. If you would like to receive a rebate though a utility program, you must do so within a year of the date of your audit. This is done to ensure that the work being performed to the home is based on relevant data of the existing conditions of your home. If you wait longer than a year, you will need to perform a new audit at full price (does not quality for a rebate) to re-calculate existing conditions.

How does the utility rebate work?

Because we are participating contractors in utility rebate programs, we can provide a rebate. Currently, we can provide rebates of 50% of the cost to insulate and airseal a home up to $2000. You will receive information regarding your eligibility of receiving a rebate when you receive your report. If you decide to move forward with work, we will submit the proper paperwork to ensure you receive your rebate.

What services to we provide besides energy audits?

With our background in home building, we can provide assistance with any and all services associated with improving your home. It is not uncommon for our customers to start with an energy audit and request additional work to be completed in the home.

Can you replace windows and doors?

Yes. We have relationships with great window and door manufacturers and can provide install as well.
